Name: Neela Mistry-Bradshaw
Location: Farnham, Surrey
Neela was taught by her mum to sew on a Singer treadle sewing machine at the age of 8. The best advice her mum gave her was, “If you can sew straight, you can sew anything”. She took this advice head on and since then has been obsessed with fabric and sewing anything from clothing, costumes, soft furnishings to fabric decorations.
As a child she began collecting patterns from the latest Prima and Essentials magazines, making clothes mainly for herself and for special occasions… and of course learning techniques from magazine instructions. Neela loves sewing with old saris, silks, chiffons and fabrics with Scandinavian and bold retro prints.
When Neela’s not working as a Marketing Manager in an IT consultancy or making wedding cakes (which she has now swapped for more sewing!!!), she is busy sewing her new daywear wardrobe or for her two girls. She normally dips into her pattern collection, purchases patterns or looks for free patterns online for inspiration. She enjoys hacking patterns to create unique styles or drafts patterns from scratch.
The best thing she recently made was Jasmine’s prom dress which she self-drafted from scratch and made using lace, chiffon and satin from White Tree Fabrics. The Spring Leaf Lace and the Green Silk Sari dresses are her favourites. The self-drafted dresses she’s made for her daughters include the Grease Prom dress and the Poseidon Princesses dresses (which she made for her cousin’s Greek wedding last year).
Neela is sew (!!!) excited to be sewing with White Tree Fabrics and especially sewing in her new sewing room which will soon be finished, so watch this space for new projects coming soon!
